Chronic Sinusitis
Chronic sinusitis happens when the tissues inside the sinuses, which are air-filled cavities surrounding the nasal cavity and eyes, become inflamed and blocked. Typically, the sinuses are blocked for at least 3 months or longer to be called chronic.
The sinuses, when functioning normally, produce mucus that drains through the nasal passages and down the throat. Sinusitis occurs when the nasal passages become blocked and inflamed causing the sinuses to not drain properly. This can happen for many reasons. Things like allergies or a cold can cause increased inflammation to the tissues in the nose or there may be a structural issue contributing like a deviated septum or nasal polyps. It is extremely common for people with chronic sinusitis to suffer with environmental or food sensitivities as well as a compromised gut microbiome.
This very common condition causes the nose to be stuffy, making breathing through the nose difficult. There can be sinus pressure or pain in the upper or lower sinuses as well as around the eyes or ears.
Common symptoms associated with chronic sinusitis:
Nasal inflammation
Thick nasal discharge
Post-nasal drip
Year-round congestion
Reduced sense of smell
Dull pain or pressure on the face
Tender to the touch sinuses
Headaches
